What is Experiential Surprise?
Experiential Surprise is a blog devoted to covering the display of contemporary art in Baltimore City and Washington D.C.
What’s in a name?
In the second chapter of Hal Foster‘s Return of the Real, he says the following, “Although the experiential surprise of minimalism is difficult to recapture its conceptual provocation remains…”. The notion of art – and specifically new art – as an “experiential surprise” is an apt one. The phrase may not relate specifically to Baltimore and D.C., but it relates a lot to what attracts people to making and viewing contemporary art anywhere in the world. It describes the moment when you see a work of art that takes over your senses, that makes you stop and pay attention. Experiential Surprise seeks out these moments of interest, and aims to share them with its readers.
